Abstract:  The Automatic Transfer Switch presentation will focus on properly specifying the transition method based on the types of loads and application. This will cover the advantages and disadvantages of open transition, delayed transition, and closed transition – while also briefly discussing PG&E’s Rule 21 and its effect on introducing closed transition switches to the grid. In addition to ATS transition modes, we will discuss the benefits of ATS with bypass-isolation. We will also discuss criteria for how to correctly specify 3-pole vs. 4 pole ATSs depending on the grounding scheme and ground fault considerations.  Lastly, we will cover UL 1008 with emphasis on Revision 7 released November 1, 2014 and how it affects appropriately sizing your ATS based on the associated withstand close-on rating (WCR).
Biography: Alex Lotz began his career with ASCO in 2012 after graduating from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Alex started in ASCO’s Metro NY sales office and relocated to Northern California shortly after completing product training at ASCO’s headquarters and manufacturing locations throughout the US. As a participant in IEEE throughout college, Alex has continued his affiliation by attending IEEE / IAS meetings, presentations, and conferences throughout the Bay Area.
